Instagram username generator

Type the words you would say out loud — your name, your brand, what you make — and the ideas come back joined, dotted, underscored and shortened. Those four moves are not ours: they are what Instagram's own help page tells you to do when the name you wanted is gone.

Ideas are capped at 30 characters for Instagram and generated in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Type a word or two above and the ideas appear here.

Availability

Instagram is the one platform here we can check: press Check on an idea and the checker reads that handle's public profile page and tells you whether an account already holds it. It is a read of a public page, not a login, and a name that comes back free can still be blocked when you try to claim it.

Instagram’s own rules

Instagram does not publish the character limit in a page an automated reader can open (checked 2026-09-02), so no limit is quoted on this page. Ideas here are capped at 30 characters and use only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if the Instagram username I want is taken?+

Instagram’s help page answers this directly: add periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations to get to an available version of the name. That is what the generator does for you in one pass, and the Check button tells you which of them is actually free.

Does this check whether the Instagram username is available?+

Yes — for Instagram only. Press Check on any idea and it opens our Instagram username checker, which reads the public profile page for that handle. No login, no scraping of anything private. A handle that reads as free can still be refused at sign-up, for example if it is reserved or was recently released.

Will I lose followers if I change my Instagram username?+

No — the account is the same account. But Instagram says your followers may be notified of the change, and that a change on an account which reaches a lot of people may be reviewed before it takes effect.

Can I get my old Instagram username back?+

In most cases, yes: Instagram says you can change back to a name you used before, provided nobody new has taken it and it was not recently removed from an active account you do not own. That makes a rename far less final on Instagram than on Reddit or Twitch.

Should the handle have a period or an underscore in it?+

One of them, at most. Both are legal and both are Instagram’s own suggestion for getting around a taken name, but a handle is something people repeat out loud — every separator is a thing you have to say. If two versions are free, take the one you can dictate over a phone.

Guides

Picked a name?

Connect the account, then write once for all of them

The same name on Instagram, TikTok, X and Threads means four accounts to post to. Connect each with its own sign-in and one caption reaches all four, each within its own limit.

Write once, tailor per platform

One caption; each platform gets its own card with its real limit, a title where one is needed, a first comment where the platform allows it.

Schedule, queue, or repeat

Pick a time, drop it in recurring slots, or recycle a post every few weeks. Best times to post come from your own history.

Media fitted per platform

An image outside a platform's ratio is padded with a blurred copy of itself. Carousels where allowed, a PDF as a LinkedIn document.

$5 per connected account / month

Two accounts is ten dollars, eleven is fifty-five. No tiers, no seats, unlimited posts. Cancel from your account page.
