Instagram username checker

Type a name; we look at the public profile page and tell you whether someone already answers to it. No login, nothing posted, nothing stored.

@

1–30 characters; letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

What is an Instagram handle?

Your Instagram handle is your @username: the unique name in your profile link (instagram.com/handle), the one people type to find you, and the one they tag. "Handle", "username", "IG name" and "@name" are the same thing. The display name — the bold line on your profile — is separate: it does not have to be unique, it can contain spaces and emoji, and changing it does not change your link.

Because the handle must be unique across all of Instagram, "available" is a real question: someone else may already have it, or have had it and deleted the account recently, in which case Instagram keeps it back for a while.

Rules a name has to meet

  • 1 to 30 characters.
  • Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
  • No spaces. Upper and lower case count as the same name.

Rules read from Instagram's help centre on 2026-08-29.

Picking a handle you will not regret

  • Short enough to say out loud. A handle gets spoken in videos and read from a thumbnail; under about 15 characters survives both.
  • No lookalike characters. l and 1, O and 0, double letters — every one of them is a typo waiting to send someone to the wrong profile.
  • Your name or your topic at the front. That is the word people search for; prefixes like "the" or "its" push it back.
  • Check the same handle on TikTok, YouTube and X before you commit — one name everywhere is easier to promote than four.
  • Taken? The username generator builds variations from your words and checks each one here.

Frequently asked questions

How does the check work?+

It opens the public profile page for the name, the same page anyone can open in a browser, and reads whether a profile answers. Nothing is sent to Instagram on your behalf and no login is used.

It says available but sign-up refuses it. Why?+

Instagram keeps some names back: reserved words, names on recently deleted accounts, and names that match trademarks. None of that is visible from the outside. "Available" here means no public profile has the name today.

What are the username rules on Instagram?+

Between 1 and 30 characters; letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Case does not matter.

Can I check many names at once?+

One at a time, on purpose — bulk checks are how names get sniped. Type, check, decide.

What is an Instagram handle?+

Your handle is your @username — the unique name in your profile URL (instagram.com/yourhandle) and the one people type to find or tag you. It is different from your display name, which can be anything and does not have to be unique.

Is an Instagram handle the same as a username?+

Yes. "Handle", "username", "IG name" and "@name" all mean the same thing on Instagram: the unique @ identifier. The display name (the bold name on your profile) is a separate, non-unique field.

Can I change my Instagram handle later?+

Yes, from Edit profile. Your old handle becomes available to others after a while, and links to the old URL stop working, so pick one you will keep.

What if the name I want is taken?+

Try the username generator: it builds variations from your words (dots, a niche word, a short prefix) within Instagram’s 30-character rules and links straight back here to check each one.

Found a free handle?

Connect the account, then write once for all of them

Once the account exists, connect it with Instagram's own sign-in and every caption you write reaches it — fitted to Instagram's 2,200 characters, its media rule and a first comment for the hashtags.

Write once, tailor per platform

One caption; each platform gets its own card with its real limit, a title where one is needed, a first comment where the platform allows it.

Schedule, queue, or repeat

Pick a time, drop it in recurring slots, or recycle a post every few weeks. Best times to post come from your own history.

Media fitted per platform

An image outside a platform's ratio is padded with a blurred copy of itself. Carousels where allowed, a PDF as a LinkedIn document.

$5 per connected account / month

Two accounts is ten dollars, eleven is fifty-five. No tiers, no seats, unlimited posts. Cancel from your account page.
