YouTube tag generator

Type the title and the two or three phrases the video is about. The tags are built from those words only, in the order YouTube would need them, and counted against the 500-character cap the way YouTube counts it.

The 500-character rule and the way it is counted are from YouTube's API documentation, read 2026-09-03. YouTube's help page says tags play a minimal role in discovery; the title, thumbnail and description matter more.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags can a YouTube video have?+

YouTube does not cap the number; it caps the characters. The whole tag list must fit in 500 characters, and it is counted the way the YouTube API counts it: the commas between tags count, and a tag with a space in it is wrapped in quotation marks that count too. "Foo Baz" costs nine characters, "Foo-Baz" seven.

Do tags help a video rank?+

Less than people think. YouTube's own help page says tags "play a minimal role in your video's discovery" and that the title, thumbnail and description matter more. Tags still fix a misspelled or unusual name and make the video eligible for searches in the exact phrases you add — which is why this tool starts from the phrases you type, not a list of trending words.

Where do the generated tags come from?+

Only from your input. The phrases you type come first; then the title and its content words, their neighbouring pairs, five fixed search shapes ("how to …", "… tutorial", "… for beginners", "… explained", "… tips"), the single words, and your channel name last. Nothing is pulled from other videos, and the same input always gives the same list.

Can tags get a video in trouble?+

Yes, if they are misleading. Tags unrelated to the video, and tag-stuffing in the description, fall under YouTube's spam and deceptive-practices policy. Keep to what the video is about; remove anything from the list that does not fit.
