How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?
Checked against the sources below on 2026-08-29.
Short answer: YouTube does not pay per view, and it does not publish a rate per thousand. It pays a share of the money advertisers spent on the ads shown around your videos, and that spend varies with the audience, the topic, the country and the month. Two channels with identical view counts can earn amounts that differ several times over.
What YouTube actually commits to
The commitment is a revenue share, not a price. For long-form videos your share is set in your partner agreement, which you can read in YouTube Studio under Earn → View agreement. For Shorts, YouTube says so on the record: monetizing creators keep 45% of the revenue allocated to them from the Shorts creator pool.
The "creator pool" is the part people miss. Ad revenue from the Shorts feed is not attached to your video; it goes into a pool per country, a slice is taken out to pay for licensed music used across all Shorts, and what is left is divided among monetizing creators in proportion to their share of engaged views. Then the 45% applies. YouTube’s own worked example: a Short with 1 million engaged views out of 100 million in the pool is allocated 1%, and the creator keeps 45% of that allocation.
Why "per 1,000 views" numbers online disagree
- Advertiser demand is not the same everywhere: a view from a country where advertisers pay more is worth more than a view from one where they pay less, and the same video gets both.
- Topic matters: ads about finance, software or insurance are sold at higher prices than ads about entertainment, and YouTube matches ads to content.
- Not every view shows an ad. A viewer with an ad blocker, a very short watch, or a video that only shows a skippable ad that was skipped earns less or nothing.
- Long-form and Shorts are paid on different systems, so a channel’s "rate" is a blend that moves whenever the mix moves.
- Any figure you see quoted is a creator’s own dashboard for their own audience. It is real for them and only for them.
Before any of it: the eligibility bar
To share ad revenue at all you need the YouTube Partner Program, and YouTube’s published requirement is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Watch time from the Shorts feed does not count toward the 4,000 hours.
Read your own numbers, not someone else’s. YouTube Studio → Analytics → Revenue shows RPM, which is exactly "how much did I earn per 1,000 views, after YouTube’s share", for your channel. That is the only per-thousand figure that is true for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official rate per 1,000 views?+
No. YouTube commits to a revenue share (45% on Shorts; long-form per your agreement), not to a price per view. Any per-thousand number is someone’s own channel average.
Do Shorts pay less than long videos?+
They are paid differently: Shorts revenue is pooled per country and divided by engaged views, then the 45% share applies. Whether that comes to less depends on the pool and your share of it.
Where do I see my own number?+
YouTube Studio → Analytics → Revenue. RPM is revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s cut; CPM is what advertisers paid per 1,000 ad impressions before it.
